Sigiriya is the home to the “Fortress in the Sky” a 5th century AD fortress which is perhaps the most fantastic single wonder of the Island. It is also known as Lion Rock because of the huge lion which used to stand guard at the entrance to the fortress. At the top of the rock, some 200meters high is a complex system of water gardens – claimed to be the first of its kind in Asia. The fortress was once the palace of its creator King Kashyapa.
